David Cerda Marks 25 Years with Hell in a Handbag
David Cerda, renowned in Chicago for his stage antics, is celebrating his 25th anniversary with Hell in a Handbag Productions. Cerda, a 1979 Hammond High School graduate, honors Joan Crawford in his latest production. In his role as Crawford, alongside his terrier Walter, he greeted audiences after his performance of ‘Joan Crawford Goes to Hell,’ which closes on October 4, 2026.
Originally staged in 1999 under Sweetback Productions, the play features three actors portraying Crawford, showcasing moments from her life with humor and drama. Cerda writes and stars in the show, depicting Crawford’s deathbed and her afterlife journey, encountering Satan, played by Nick Dorado. Christina, Crawford’s daughter role, is portrayed by TJ O’Brien.
Directed by Cheryl Snodgrass, the cast includes Gretchen Greear as ‘Joan No. 2’ and Nicholas Ian as ‘Joan No. 3.’ Other cast members play important figures in Crawford’s life, from her assistant and child-age daughter to her housekeeper and attorney. The production boasts improved costumes, sets, and multimedia elements, enhancing the experience.
Tickets for the show are available at handbagproductions.org, starting at $39. Cerda’s creative vision aligns well with his company’s anniversary, promising exciting future projects.
