Caroline Candela, a junior at Metea Valley, often stands out for her vocal presence rather than her stature. At 5-foot-2, she competes amid taller players, making herself heard clearly on the volleyball court. ‘I like to rule the court, be loud, aggressive, and seize every opportunity,’ said Candela.
Despite being a newcomer in varsity games, Candela shares libero responsibilities with senior Sienna Bialek, showcasing her remarkable defensive skills for the Mustangs who hold an 11-14 record. Her performance sets a strong example for her teammates.
‘She’s awesome,’ said Metea Valley coach Dave Macdonald. ‘She plays with no hesitation for her own safety and fiercely defends. She goes for every ball, earning trust from hitters and defenders. It’s a blessing to have her.’
Junior outside hitter Ishana Harish acknowledged Candela’s influence: ‘Her energy is unparalleled. She lifts everyone’s spirits and is consistently the loudest, motivating us after every point, win or loss.’
During a match against Downers Grove North, which ended in a 25-11, 27-25 loss, Candela motivated her teammates to approach the second set aggressively. ‘We needed to be louder. The first set was quiet and lacking aggression. I encouraged the team to enter the next set fighting, not dwelling on the first set’s loss.’
In the subsequent set, Candela spearheaded their defense, securing nine digs, three service points, and an ace, taking the Mustangs to a 7-3 lead. Harish noted the impact: ‘She’s vital for our communication. We struggled initially but her presence unites us, making us more vocal.’

The defeat marked the fifth consecutive loss for the Mustangs, reflecting their inconsistent season. They took an early lead in the second set but faced setbacks, eventually rallying to tie.
‘We have many young players,’ Candela said. ‘We began with a winning mindset but hit a slump, unable to close games effectively. It’s not always poor play, but failure to finish.’
Coach Macdonald praised Candela’s relentless effort: ‘She excels at the difficult tasks of defense, thriving even with injuries, like a broken nail. She’s fearless, diving around, regardless of physical discomfort.’
Candela enjoys defense and serve receive, embracing her role despite her height. Previously involved in gymnastics and basketball, she discovered her passion in volleyball during seventh grade.
‘I love my teammates and the unity in volleyball,’ she expressed. Candela aspires to improve continuously and pursue volleyball extensively. Macdonald appreciates her commitment: ‘Her consistency is crucial, necessary as the season progresses. I hope she keeps advancing.’
