Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie Jalon Daniels is set to start his first NFL game on Sunday due to Baker Mayfield’s injury. This opportunity arises as the Buccaneers prepare to take on the Green Bay Packers. Traditionally, the NFL is synonymous with clichés, with players often emphasizing the importance of focusing on each game.
Daniels, formerly of the Kansas Jayhawks, shared his mindset with reporters ahead of the game. When asked about maintaining composure on the field, he referred to advice from college, emphasizing the importance of being a ‘thermostat’ rather than a ‘thermometer.’ He explained that setting the tone for the team is crucial, ensuring balance regardless of the team’s emotional state.
‘Absolutely. I think that one thing I learned in college was, you can’t be the thermometer, you have to be the thermostat,’ he stated. ‘You have to be someone who comes in and is able to set the temperature of the room, not test the room and try to be able to blend in with it.’
This perspective serves Daniels as he approaches the pivotal Week 4 matchup. If Daniels performs well, it may offset the pressure on the team, especially with concerns over a possible 0-4 start to the season due to Mayfield’s absence from a right thumb injury, sidelining him for at least three weeks.
Buccaneers’ coach Todd Bowles highlighted the team’s collective effort, noting Daniels won’t face the challenge alone. “For us, it’s just trying to get a win,” Bowles said. The game’s outcome relies on all players executing their roles effectively on both sides of the ball and special teams.
Daniels sought guidance from Mayfield ahead of the game. Mayfield advised him to remain composed and true to himself: “You’ve been dreaming of this opportunity, just stay composed, play as yourself. Don’t try to be anybody else besides you, and go out there and just go make football plays,” Mayfield advised.
The Buccaneers face a challenging season, but Daniels’ debut could offer a much-needed spark. His performance against the Packers will be scrutinized as he navigates this critical early-career moment.
