On a recent supermarket visit, navigating the self-checkout lanes proved to be a source of frustration. These systems, intended to streamline shopping, often require multiple interactions. During this trip, I had to use the keypad no less than five times.
The first query verified whether the total amount was correct. Following that, it prompted me to decide on giving to a charity. Then, I needed to confirm the number of bags I used. The system also required me to specify if my card was credit or debit. Ultimately, entering my PIN became necessary.
This experience highlights how self-checkout systems, though marketed as efficient, often involve numerous steps. These frequently leave users feeling exasperated instead of the promised ease and speed.
