Ainsley Wilson’s Growth into a Leader at Burlington Central

Ainsley Wilson, a senior middle hitter at Burlington Central, arrived as a freshman with raw talent but lacked confidence. Now, committed to Dayton, she reflects on her journey to becoming a dominant player. “I was more timid,” Wilson admitted. “I didn’t believe in myself. Now, I’ve gained a lot of confidence.”

The 6-foot-4 standout poses a significant challenge for opposing teams. Her performance and leadership have greatly impacted the Rockets this season. In a recent match against Jacobs, Wilson recorded five kills, two blocks, and two aces, leading her team to a 25-20, 25-17 victory. Other contributors included Lani Akenten with five kills and seven digs, Kaylie Brown with four kills, and Makenna Manganiello with six aces.

Burlington Central coach Julia Smagacz has witnessed Wilson’s transformation. More than her athletic skills, Smagacz highlights Wilson’s leadership. “The biggest growth is her leadership,” Smagacz said. Initially, joining varsity as a freshman was daunting, but Wilson has become a vocal leader, setting an example for her team.

Wilson acknowledged her potential as a leader but initially held back due to seniority. As a senior now, she confidently assumes her role. “I think I’m a natural leader,” she said. “I speak up and say what needs to happen.” Her responsibilities have expanded, and she is now a serving middle, a role she aspired to fulfill.

In Thursday’s match, the Rockets overcame a 20-20 tie to win. Wilson delivered two consecutive kills, contributing to a commanding 20-12 lead in the second game. Jacobs’ coach Michael Depa recognized the challenge Wilson posed but felt his team managed well against her overall.

Wilson sees her younger self in Akenten, the talented freshman outside hitter. She offers guidance to help Akenten navigate challenges. “I’m good friends with her,” Wilson shared. “I try to help her as much as I can.” Together, Wilson and Akenten are creating a remarkable season for the Rockets.
