Steps to Ensure Your Safety During a Rideshare Trip
Passengers should have a plan for when a rideshare trip becomes uncomfortable. Recently, a TikTok video highlighted an incident where a woman felt uneasy during an Uber ride at 3 a.m. After the driver wanted to stop for 15-20 minutes to charge the car, she grew worried. The car’s charge level was at 43%, and her destination was 25 minutes away.
The Immediate Response
In this case, the woman decided to end her trip and contacted the police. Uber, on investigating the situation, stated that they took appropriate action. Safety is paramount, and Uber has features like an emergency button and GPS tracking in the app for these situations.
Technology and Safety
Dillon Abend, founder and CEO of rideshare safety app 3rd-i, suggests sharing your location via the app with several trusted individuals. Before starting the ride, passengers should confirm the driver’s details and vehicle license plate with the app information.
The Importance of the SAMI Steps
Seymour Josephson, co-president of the What’s My Name Foundation, focuses on educating passengers on safety. The foundation promotes four safety steps: stop, ask, match, and inform, also known as the “SAMI” steps. These steps encourage passengers to verify their ride before entering.
The Josephsons, who founded the organization after their daughter’s tragic death, aim to make rideshare trips safer. They also helped introduce a four-digit PIN with Uber and Lyft for added security.
Ensuring Safety Without Fear
While the goal is not to deter rideshare usage, understanding and following safety measures can protect both riders and drivers. Being informed and prepared can help avoid potentially harmful situations.
