Naperville Central senior midfielder Liam Walsh is concluding his high school journey where it started, at Naperville Central. His path, however, took him far beyond typical high school experiences.
Liam spent his freshman and sophomore years playing JV1 soccer at Naperville Central. Then, he took a unique opportunity that brought him to Spain for a year. Naperville Central coach Troy Adams explained, “He went to Spain for a year. It was a combination of soccer and some cultural experience. That is a cool thing.”
In August 2025, Liam left for Malaga, a city on Spain’s southern coast, to pursue both soccer training and studies. He returned in May, significantly changed. “Living in a foreign country presents its own sets of challenges. I think he’s come back as a much more mature person,” Adams noted. “That experience helps.” Despite having supervision, being away from parents required newfound independence, which helped him mature.
On the soccer field, Liam rapidly adapted. He started with a team in the sixth or seventh division, playing on the U-21 team and training with the senior team. “I played with a team in the sixth or seventh division,” Walsh stated. “I think it’s helped me tremendously, playing against older players.” Being surrounded by seasoned players, some over 30, sharpened his skills.
Coach Adams observed noticeable improvements in Liam’s tactical and technical abilities. “Soccer-wise, he returned as a calmer and more comfortable player,” Adams said. He also learned when to be creative and when to play safe, enhancing his situational game understanding.
Senior goalkeeper Sean VanBaalen commended Liam. “He’s always ready for every game,” he said. “He tries to keep everyone locked in and ready for the next match.” His contributions also extended to helping the team’s performance, evidenced in a recent 2-2 tie against Marmion at Memorial Stadium. Liam’s ability to execute through balls and defensively guard the goal stood out.
Liam’s background is rooted in sports, with both parents having athletic legacies at North Central College. Living in Spain was challenging but offered maturity growth. “It’s hard being away from family, but eventually you’ve got to do that,” Liam reflected. He managed daily life responsibilities, including laundry, while living with teammates.
He trained six days a week and participated in all U-21 games. The experience allowed him to explore Spain and enjoy leisure time at the beach. These experiences prepared him for the Redhawks’ aspirations in the Class 3A West Aurora Sectional playoffs.
“He’s one of the seniors who leads by example,” Coach Adams remarked. “He works hard, stays positive, and tries to do the right thing.” Liam believes in taking opportunities abroad, suggesting, “If you work hard enough, I think you’ve got it.”
