Jack Smith Questioned by Senate Judiciary Committee Over Trump Investigations
Fox News correspondent David Spunt reports that former special counsel Jack Smith testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill. Republican senators pressed Smith on allegations of political overreach in his investigations into President Donald Trump.
Smith faced rigorous questioning from GOP lawmakers regarding his inquiries surrounding Trump. Meanwhile, a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., has heard evidence regarding possible false statements made by former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson to the committee investigating the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
According to a source familiar with the matter, more evidence might be presented to the grand jury soon. Hutchinson, who was a prominent witness before the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot and Trump’s attempts to contest the 2020 election results, testified in June 2022.
Hutchinson’s testimony was broadcast nationally, revealing Trump’s alleged actions on January 6. She recounted a story she heard from another official about the President’s reaction when informed he couldn’t go to the Capitol. Her account of a confrontation inside the presidential vehicle was later challenged by others.
Despite disputes, Hutchinson stands by her testimony given to the committee. It is unclear which parts of her statements are under grand jury scrutiny. Recent reports indicate that the Justice Department is probing potential false statements to Congress by Hutchinson, with a federal grand jury convened to examine the evidence.
It’s important to note that grand jury proceedings don’t automatically lead to criminal charges. Presenting evidence isn’t proof of a crime. The U.S. Department of Justice has not issued comments on this matter, and neither have Hutchinson’s representatives.
