Luka Dončić approaches the 2026-27 NBA season as the sole star for the Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James, formerly his teammate, has embarked on a new journey with the Philadelphia 76ers. Before their separation, many anticipated a championship win for the Lakers, yet that dream went unfulfilled.
Reflecting on the previous season, Dončić attributes a missed opportunity to a decision he regrets. On April 2, the Lakers boasted a strong 16-2 record, reflecting their dominance. They lined up against the reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, offering Dončić a chance to shine.
At that point, Dončić was contending for an MVP title. Unfortunately, the game ended in a heavy 139-96 defeat to the Thunder. During the second quarter, Dončić felt a tweak in his hamstring. Despite this, he persisted in the game, unwilling to step down.
“When it comes to my spirit of trying to win, I am just stubborn,” Dončić shared with Sports Illustrated. “I felt a little bit in the first half that I should have just stopped. I should have come out.”
His persistence led to a Grade 2 hamstring strain, sidelining him for the final games and entire postseason. LeBron James, who took on a greater role in the playoffs, led the team past the Houston Rockets but faltered against Oklahoma City in the second round.
Dončić wonders if events might have unfolded differently had he stayed on the court with James. Yet, the reality sees the San Antonio Spurs in the finals against the New York Knicks, a contest that Dončić and the Lakers could only watch from afar.
Scott Thompson reports for Fox News Digital, detailing this turn of events and the lingering questions surrounding Dončić’s decisions and the Lakers’ thwarted plans.
