In a heated Michigan Senate debate, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers exchanged sharp criticisms. El-Sayed labeled Rogers as “weak,” “cowardly,” and a “Trump administration puppet.” Rogers retaliated, calling El-Sayed a “glitchy AI chatbot” and accused him of deception.
The candidates, competing for a critical Senate seat, debated various topics including the Iran war, U.S.-Canada trade tensions, immigration, healthcare, and living costs. Insults and accusations of indecisiveness and financial conflicts punctuated their exchanges.
During the debate, both candidates supported pausing the gas tax amidst high energy prices due to Middle Eastern conflicts. They questioned the ongoing tariff conflict with Canada.
Rogers advocated for resolving the Iran situation, claiming that discussions with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick were underway to conclude the trade dispute. Meanwhile, El-Sayed criticized Rogers’ allegiance to President Trump’s policies, particularly on trade and Iran.
On immigration, Rogers acknowledged inappropriate intense operations in Minnesota, while maintaining that ICE targets serious criminals. El-Sayed, who supports abolishing ICE, agreed that undocumented immigrants involved in violent crimes should face deportation but opposed broad constitutional violations.
Healthcare was another contentious topic. Rogers condemned El-Sayed’s Medicare For All proposal, suggesting it would eliminate private insurance. El-Sayed assured that retaining private insurance would be permissible, causing Rogers to express surprise.
Foreign policy disagreements dominated the debate. El-Sayed criticized the Iran war and Rogers’ hawkish stance, advocating for diplomacy akin to the Obama-era nuclear deal. Rogers asserted the war’s potential end due to Iran’s weakened state.
El-Sayed, opposing U.S. military assistance to Israel, rebuked hypotheticals comparing threats from Iran and Israel, attributing U.S. Iran war involvement to Israeli influence. Rogers affirmed staunch support for Israel, conditionally, based on nuclear weapon intentions.
The candidates scrutinized each other’s campaign finances. El-Sayed criticized Rogers’ Florida property, while Rogers referenced El-Sayed’s wife’s UAE property. Rogers touted Florida’s American location, to which El-Sayed retorted about Michigan’s relevance.
