If you visited Walmart looking for a symbolic set of resistance gear, you might find a kaffiyeh, a green abortion-rights bandanna, a pink blazer, and a black T-shirt saying NO KINGS. The package wouldn’t include batteries, and a placard would come separately. For more traditional Democrats, there’s the Heritage Collection, featuring an immaculate white pantsuit, worn collectively in remembrance of the suffragists.
This idea serves as a joke, reflecting a reality within Democratic circles. Over the last ten years, a specific political attire emerged. There are clothes supporting reproductive rights, Palestinian solidarity, opposition to Donald Trump, suffragist memories, and sometimes a combination of all these causes. At the 2024 State of the Union, Representatives Summer Lee, Cori Bush, and Rashida Tlaib sported kaffiyehs to support Palestinians, while Democratic women wore suffragist white, expressing their stance on reproductive rights.
These choices are not new. During Trump’s first term, Democratic congresswomen often wore white, notably at the 2019 State of the Union. The trend resurfaced in 2024 and in 2026, over a dozen congresswomen dressed in white again to protest the SAVE America Act. Meanwhile, in 2022, Congress members including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib marched to the Supreme Court with green bandannas stating “Won’t Back Down,” criticizing the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
For Trump’s 2025 address, the color shifted to pink. Representative Teresa Leger Fernández, leading the Democratic Women’s Caucus, described pink as a hue of power and protest. Nancy Pelosi joined many Democratic women in this coordinated act. Elsewhere, Representative Maxwell Frost wore a black shirt with the message “NO KINGS LIVE HERE,” and Representative Delia Ramirez wore one saying “NO KING. NO COUP.”
One less favored memory revolves around June 2020. Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and others kneeled in the Capitol wearing kente cloth stoles after George Floyd’s murder. Although meant to show solidarity, the image conveyed is more complex. The kente cloth, rooted in Ghanaian culture, carries associations of royalty and identity. For the Democrats, the photo’s message didn’t align perfectly with intentions.
This uniform concept is not only in Washington. In liberal neighborhoods across America, political leanings are evident. The kaffiyeh around the neck, a protest T-shirt, the bandanna, tote bags, pins, and slogan sweatshirts all communicate ideologies. These people needn’t attend a demonstration because their attire speaks of their views, often expressing anger and highlighting objections.
Notably, this political dressing isn’t invented by liberals. A red baseball cap can reveal much about a person from afar. The MAGA hat, for instance, stands as a significant piece of political attire, offering more affirmative messaging: Make America Great Again. It suggests identity and desires.
Conversely, the Democratic wardrobe increasingly communicates opposition. Against Trump, they wear pink. Green signifies a stand on abortion topics. White shows opposition to perceived threats to women’s rights. Kaffiyehs portray dissent towards certain international positions. Individually, each garment conveys meaning. Together, they depict a group ready for protest.
For the broader public, this may seem unimportant. However, clothing communicates belonging. Democrats’ attire often seems oppositional, not merely partisan. To govern is to exhibit power and intent, not perpetual objection. Democrats have refined a look that appears more like protest than governance. Supporting worthy causes is common, and many believe in defending these principles. Yet, when clothing better communicates discontent than political strategies do, it reveals shortcomings.
Rather than updating their attire, Democrats might benefit from focusing on a strategy for winning hearts and votes.
