Authorities are investigating a potential serial killer along the Lansing River Trail, near Michigan State University. The Lansing Police Department is examining five deaths over the last year, which may have involved an individual targeting people at night.
The Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety has urged vigilance among students, particularly when venturing out at night. Enhanced security measures, like additional LED lighting and emergency phones, have been implemented. Routine bike patrols by MSU Police Officers are also in effect.
The most recent incidents have highlighted the vulnerability of the unhoused population, who often lack the physical and digital ‘footprints’ that aid investigations, according to criminologist Dr. David Hayes. He noted that this makes connecting the cases particularly challenging.
One of the victims, Daniel Lusk, 22, was found fatally stabbed under the East Michigan Avenue bridge. This incident occurred less than a mile from the university campus, where students frequently commute.
Edward Joseph Smith, 23, was arrested in connection to Lusk’s stabbing. However, police have not linked him to the other four deaths.
In response, Lansing Mayor Andy Schor assured that the trail remains safe, noting increased police presence both downtown and along the river trail at all times.
Police Chief Rob Backus reported that all victims were homeless White men, emphasizing the ongoing and active nature of the investigation.
