Caleb Wilson’s Preseason Performance and Bulls Takeaways
Caleb Wilson’s Clutch Attempt
In the final moments of a preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies, Caleb Wilson aimed to make a decisive play. With only 7.9 seconds remaining on the clock and trailing 102-100, Wilson took control at the top of the arc, determined to clinch victory. There was no complex strategy involved. He used a ball screen, dribbled twice to the right, and made a step-back jump shot attempt. Wilson ignored the option of tying the game. He wanted the win. Having already scored five 3-pointers, Wilson believed he could hit one more. Despite his confidence, the shot fell short, bouncing off the front rim. While the Chicago Bulls lost 104-100, Wilson was satisfied with his decision. In the locker room, Wilson humorously noted, “We all trying to go home. Trying to end the game right there. No overtime. I’m going for it all every time.”
Wilson has consistently addressed questions about his shooting ability with enthusiasm. Many doubted his capacity from beyond the arc when he entered the NBA. At North Carolina, he averaged only 1.1 attempts per game from long range, shooting under 26%. This led to skepticism regarding his NBA potential. Wilson’s performance in the loss — 5-for-11 in 3-pointers, scoring 15 of his 21 points — reinforced his capability. This echoed his summer league debut, where he succeeded in seven of 11 attempts. These efforts will gain significance once regular-season play begins. Wilson’s opportunity arises soon, as the Bulls face the Toronto Raptors on October 21.
Matas Buzelis’s Ankle Injury
Bulls forward Matas Buzelis rolled his right ankle during a first-quarter play against the Grizzlies, just three minutes into the game. After blocking a shot, he awkwardly landed, scoring the opening basket before the incident. Buzelis initially tried to continue playing, deflecting the medical team and attempting a spin move into a 3-point shot. However, a later evaluation led to his withdrawal for the remainder of the game. He scored six points and made one block in nearly 13 minutes. After the game, Buzelis downplayed the injury’s severity, indicating he would travel with the team to Denver for the next preseason game. “It’s not bad,” Buzelis remarked. “Just being smart in preseason. Just a little sore, nothing crazy. I tried to play. I hate missing games. I think I’ll be ready for Sunday.”
Tobe Awaka Faces a Tough Opponent
Bulls center Tobe Awaka faced a significant challenge against Grizzlies center Zach Edey. Known for his relentless pursuit of rebounds, the 6-foot-8 forward was given increased playing time due to injuries to teammates Nic Claxton and Zach Collins. Awaka is praised for his ability to rebound, screen, and pass, often preferring to assist rather than shoot. Although Awaka’s high-effort style was challenging against the 7-3 Edey, Awaka achieved four offensive rebounds but didn’t score. He contributed seven total rebounds, two assists, and two turnovers in over 24 minutes. Edey managed 10 points and five rebounds in about 16 minutes, emphasizing the Bulls’ limitations until their regular centers return.
Lottery Matchup
The preseason game featured a well-known rivalry — Caleb Wilson vs. No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer. Both players have an extensive history from high school AAU teams to college rivals at Duke and North Carolina. Boozer demonstrated respect for Wilson throughout the predraft and summer league phases. Grizzlies restricted Boozer’s play, resting him in the entire second half. Despite limited minutes, Boozer recorded 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists before his break.
