Republicans aim to capture a Michigan Senate seat that Democrats have controlled since 1979. As Election Day on November 3 approaches, the race between former Representative Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed remains tight. The seat became available when Democratic Senator Gary Peters chose not to pursue a third term. This seat has been under Democratic control since Carl Levin won it in 1978, succeeding Republican Senator Robert Griffin. Levin’s tenure lasted 36 years before Gary Peters filled the position in 2015.
A victory for Rogers would mark the end of a prolonged losing streak for Republicans, who haven’t secured a Senate victory in Michigan since 1994 when Spencer Abraham took the state’s other Senate seat.
Current polls, taken in October, show El-Sayed with a slight edge, generally within the margin of error. The Cook Political Report classifies the race as a Toss-Up, and strategists from both political parties consider it crucial for determining Senate control in January.
Rogers narrowly lost to now-Senator Elissa Slotkin in 2024 by less than 20,000 votes. Despite facing no primary challenger, he benefits from former President Donald Trump’s endorsement. El-Sayed, a progressive former public health official supported by independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, narrowly defeated Michigan Representative Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary on August 4.
The Cook Political Report rates the race a Toss-Up, making it pivotal for Senate control in the upcoming term.
Latest Polls Show Tight Competition
Six polls conducted between late September and mid-October indicate a competitive race, with El-Sayed slightly ahead. The most recent InsiderAdvantage survey of 1,200 likely voters from October 9-10 shows El-Sayed at 48 percent and Rogers at 46 percent, leaving 5 percent undecided.
Wedgewood Polls gave El-Sayed his highest margin, showing him at 53 percent compared to Rogers’ 47 percent among 607 likely voters. Other surveys illustrated a tight contest, often within the margin of error.
The summer picture was different. Prior to the primary, a poll by the Michigan Education Association and Business Leaders for Michigan placed Rogers ahead, indicating a swing towards El-Sayed as the election approaches.
Historical Senate Control in Michigan
Michigan’s political landscape shows variability at the presidential level. It supported Trump in 2016 and 2024, but chose Biden in 2020. In Senate races, however, Democrats have consistently won since 1979.
Rogers nearly ended this streak in his 2024 loss to Slotkin. His close performance encouraged the Republican Party’s early support, including backing from Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
The Democratic primary outcome provided Republicans another opportunity. Despite backing from key figures like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Haley Stevens lost to El-Sayed, creating a division within the Democratic coalition.
Republicans have aggressively targeted El-Sayed. An ad by the National Republican Senatorial Committee labels him as a radical candidate, highlighting his full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed. Meanwhile, Trump also made inflammatory remarks, which El-Sayed countered by noting his U.S. birth.
Key Issues and Campaign Strategies
Rogers has been distancing from the White House on select issues. He criticized the ongoing war with Iran and urged a quick resolution. He also opposed Trump’s tariffs on Canada, stating, “Canada is not our enemy.”
El-Sayed emphasizes Rogers’ alignment with Trump, focusing on economic concerns like housing and trade impacts on Michigan. The campaign highlights this connection to sway voters adversely affected by administration policies.
The candidates debated on October 8 at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, with the discussion often turning personal. Rogers maintained his stance on key policies, while El-Sayed faced numerous questions about his views on Israel.
Financially, the campaign landscape favors Rogers, with external groups pouring resources into supporting him. Despite being outspent nearly 2-to-1, El-Sayed compensates through extensive travel and media engagement.
Democratic leaders like Whitmer have begun rallying around El-Sayed, signaling a unified campaign effort. Key figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Barack Obama plan to support El-Sayed in upcoming events.
Senate Control Stakes in 2026 Midterms
Current Senate control sits with Republicans at 53-47, where Vice President JD Vance resolves ties. Democrats aim for a net gain of four seats. While Republican-held seats in states like Maine and Ohio present opportunities, Michigan remains a critical challenge.
A win for Rogers could cushion potential Republican losses elsewhere, maintaining their Senate majority expected in a Democratic-leaning national environment.
With absentee voting already underway and early in-person voting set to begin on October 24, Michigan voters will soon have their say.
