Mike Tomlin concluded his tenure as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers in January after 19 seasons. This decision followed the team’s first-round playoff loss to the Houston Texans. Recently, Tomlin transitioned to a broadcasting role with NBC Sports. He regularly appears during “Sunday Night Football,” providing pre-game, halftime, and postgame insights.
Despite Tomlin’s apparent enjoyment of his broadcasting duties, rumors persist about his possible return to coaching. Hall of Famer Cris Carter, in a conversation with Kay Adams, criticized Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and suggested Tomlin as a fitting replacement.
“It takes a bad coach to do what he did at the end of the game, and that was take victory away from NFL players,” Carter commented on Sirianni. Carter’s remarks target Sirianni’s decision in a recent game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.
The Eagles appeared to secure a win with a last-minute field goal. However, their decision to avoid a touchback allowed the Jaguars to return the ball to midfield and attempt a game-winning field goal with a second left, leading to their defeat.
Following the game, Sirianni accepted responsibility for the call that cost the team the win. Carter pointed this out, contemplating how Tomlin might have handled such a situation, suggesting that Tomlin would likely have made a different choice.
Earlier this year, Tomlin mentioned on Pro Football Focus’s NFL Show that he continues to have a passion for coaching, although any future position would need to be the right fit for him. “I learned to never say never,” he stated, highlighting the selective nature of his potential return.
For now, Sirianni remains at the helm of the Eagles, while Tomlin enjoys his break from coaching, contributing to NBC Sports. However, Carter’s comments add an interesting angle to the ongoing dialogue about the Eagles’ coaching future, with Tomlin’s accolades making him an appealing option should the team consider a change.
