Pope Leo XIV, the 71-year-old pontiff, underwent a procedure at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome to remove a nodule from his lung on Tuesday. The Vatican confirmed that the pope underwent thoracic surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after doctors diagnosed him with lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer.
The Holy See Press Office released a statement detailing the procedure. The diagnosis was confirmed through tissue examination during the surgery, matching the results of preoperative tests. Leo spent around three hours in the operating room, although the surgery itself lasted approximately 90 minutes.
Doctors reported that the surgery was a success, with no complications. Pope Leo XIV was welcomed by Health Director Andrea Cambieri upon arrival at the hospital for the operation. After surgery, Leo awoke normally and returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor following a brief observation period, as stated by Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora.
Leo had mentioned after an Angelus address at St. Peter’s Square that a small lump was found in his lung. He emphasized that it was found early and was well situated. Following medical advice, he decided to proceed with the surgery. The pope expressed gratitude for spiritual support and requested prayers from the public.
This procedure used a video-assisted technique for the removal of the lower lobe of his right lung. The announcement was unexpected for the American-born pontiff, known to have maintained an active lifestyle without known health issues. Leo XIV regularly plays tennis and swims at the papal summer retreat in Castel Gandolfo.
The pope has planned an international trip from November 6 to 17, including stops in Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru. It remains uncertain how his health and recovery might impact these travel plans.
During his Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine. He warned of the suffering the conflict causes globally, particularly affecting poorer countries that rely on cereal and grain exports.
