Joe Manganiello recently shared details of his severe health struggle in a candid interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings. He has also documented this journey in his newly released memoir, Bloodlines.
Manganiello revealed that he was offered the role of Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s planned Batman movie while facing a severe health crisis. In 2016, he was summoned for the film offer but was critically ill, undergoing treatment for mystery symptoms. Ultimately, he had surgery to remove his entire large intestine.
The surgery saved Manganiello’s life, but left him with an ostomy bag and led to significant weight loss and other health challenges.
During the interview, Manganiello recounted how he collapsed on a film set and had to be hospitalized for two months. His recovery was challenging. He highlighted the critical decision made by his then-wife, Sofia Vergara, who was contacted as his next of kin when he was unconscious.
Vergara made a life-saving decision to remove his intestine, buying Manganiello crucial time to address his health, even though it did not solve the underlying issue. This ordeal strained their marriage, contributing to their separation and eventual divorce.
The memoir delves into Manganiello’s seven-year battle with his illness, which remained mostly private. He emphasized how this personal struggle affected both him and those around him, including his relationship with Vergara.
During the broader conversation, King raised a post shared by Vergara’s son, Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, implying dealings with a narcissistic man, which Vergara liked. Manganiello encouraged understanding of his memoir, which focuses on his suffering.
Bloodlines: A Memoir was published on October 13.
