Former Detective Linked to 1960 Child Murder

Authorities have identified a former Chicago homicide detective, Thomas F. McInerney Jr., as the killer of 8-year-old Gloria Kowalewicz, who disappeared while walking to church in 1960. This breakthrough has led investigators to review other cases that may involve McInerney.

Background on the Suspect

McInerney joined the Chicago Police Department in 1959. A year later, Gloria Kowalewicz was abducted and murdered. McInerney served with the department until his retirement in 1987. He passed away in 2006 at the age of 70.

Investigation Progress

On November 12, 1960, Gloria disappeared after leaving home to attend Mass at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. Her body was found four hours later in a forest preserve southwest of Chicago. She had been shot.

The murder led to a large investigation. Police interviewed more than 1,300 individuals and canvassed numerous neighborhoods but the case remained unsolved for decades. Critical evidence including a bullet, Gloria’s coat and shoes, and a white communion purse were preserved. Importantly, a fingerprint was lifted from the purse’s strap.

Technological Breakthrough

Advanced DNA technology enabled the Chicago police, along with FBI and Illinois State Police, to match DNA and a preserved fingerprint to McInerney. The Police Department stated, “McInerney should never have worn the CPD star, and it is devastating to accept that he was never identified and held accountable while he was alive.”

Ongoing Investigations

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office is examining other cases potentially linked to McInerney. Despite Gloria’s parents passing away without knowing her killer’s identity, authorities hope this revelation provides closure for those who knew her.

Before retiring in 2004, McInerney also worked for the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Nevada. He never faced charges for Gloria’s murder.
