The New Orleans Saints’ challenging 1-4 start has stirred frustration that reaches beyond just their fan base. Gayle Benson, the principal owner of the Saints, expressed her concerns following their third consecutive defeat. Speaking to attendees at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club luncheon, Benson was clear about the team’s disappointing record.
“That is not acceptable to me,”
she stated. Benson addressed the high expectations that were set for the team after quarterback Tyler Shough’s promising rookie season. The team aimed for an NFC South title and hoped for a playoff berth in their second year under head coach Kellen Moore.
However, the season got off to a rocky start with an overtime loss to the Detroit Lions. Though the Saints recovered briefly in Week 2, they suffered subsequent losses to the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and Minnesota Vikings.
Drew Brees recently complimented Tyler Shough’s situation with the Saints, noting the immense potential for success.
“And it falls short of what our fans truly deserve,”
Benson continued. She highlighted the emotional investment fans have in the team and acknowledged their rightful frustrations. Benson, known for her rare public comments during the season, took a critical stance on the current direction of the team.
Her eight-minute speech included a critique of head coach Kellen Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis. She emphasized her responsibility to hold the organization accountable while expecting the same from Moore and Loomis.
“Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform. Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success,”
she stated. Benson asserted her commitment to improving the team, stressing the need for better preparation and execution.
While Benson praised Loomis’s longstanding role in the front office, she expressed urgency for the Saints to make necessary improvements. This was especially important after their defeat to the Atlanta Falcons, coinciding with a special Superdome anniversary game.
“Losing this year’s anniversary game to Atlanta truly disappointed me,”
she remarked. Benson admitted she would not tolerate the current performance levels and urged the team to regain fans’ trust through action, not words.
Benson concluded by underscoring the importance of upcoming games against the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The latter represents the NFL’s first foray into France. These matches are crucial for the Saints as they work to improve their standings and performance.
