Ava Calle from Mother McAuley faces frequent skepticism about her height, with many remarking she’s too short for volleyball. At 5-foot-2, this junior libero has defied expectations despite comments about her suitability for college-level play, particularly Division I. Her response came with a commitment to Youngstown State before the season started.
“I hear it all the time — I’m too short,” Calle stated. “I play over it. Height doesn’t concern me. It’s become second nature to hear those things. Sometimes, I’m out there to try to prove people wrong. But I’m playing for my team and not worrying about what others say. Outside validation doesn’t interest me.”
Calle’s defensive prowess remains strong for the Mighty Macs. During a 25-21, 25-18 GCAC Red win against hosts St. Laurence, she accumulated eight digs. Keira McQuillan, heading to UConn, achieved 11 kills for McAuley (26-3, 5-1), while Jayce Prohaska contributed 10 kills. Setter Peyton Heatherly, bound for Coastal Carolina, provided 27 assists. Aubrey Martinez and Abby Ambrose secured nine kills each for the Vikings (20-7, 3-3). The match saw senior libero Leah Romano exit early due to a leg injury without returning.
Calle compensates for her size with remarkable toughness. “Ava is definitely a strong force for us,” stated McAuley’s coach Jen DeJarld. “She’s among the state’s strongest defenders. She’s little and quick. She charges after short balls with fearless abandon.”
Calle affirmed her aggressive approach. “I tell myself, ‘Just go,’’’ she revealed. “I don’t think much about it. Previously, I ran over chairs during club play. It’s intense. I’d do it anytime.” DeJarld noticed Calle’s confidence growing since her sophomore year. “She leads our back row with great communication and passing skills. She’s an all-around asset for us,” DeJarld praised.
McAuley secured 10 consecutive wins since a 25-21, 25-19 defeat to Benet on Sept. 22 at Lisle. This streak includes two victories against two-time Class 4A champions and local rival Marist, along with wins against Louisville’s Assumption, ranked No. 3 nationwide by the American Volleyball Coaches Association/USA Today.
“This team boasts amazing individuals,” stated Calle. “Everyone plays selflessly for one another. McAuley’s tradition and culture are wonderful. I love everybody here.” Starting her volleyball journey through her mother Erin Calle’s influence, who played at Queen of Peace, Ava embraced the sport fully after dabbling in basketball and gymnastics at school.
“Volleyball plays a crucial role in my life,” Ava expressed. “Without it, my life would be vastly different.” Despite liberos often being underestimated, Calle enjoys the role. “I aim to score for my team. Delivering perfect passes sets hitters up to score. Doing that consistently drives team victory,” she conveyed.
