The United States may have deliberately withheld early warnings about Russian missile strikes on Ukraine, according to multiple sources cited by CBS News. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine did not receive any advance alert from their allies when Russia launched an assault with ballistic missiles on Kyiv and other locations on a recent Tuesday.
Sources indicated that American officials informed Ukrainian counterparts that a system used to detect Russian missile launches failed due to poor weather conditions. However, some Ukrainian sources, requesting anonymity due to the topic’s sensitivity, expressed skepticism about this reasoning and accused the U.S. of manipulating the system.
Another wave of Russian missile strikes occurred around 3 a.m. local time the following Wednesday, but this time, the U.S. early warning system seemed operational. These offensives included more than 39 ballistic missiles and over 120 attack drones and loitering munitions targeted primarily at critical infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv. These attacks resulted in six fatalities and left roughly 600,000 people without power.
Addressing concerns regarding intelligence sharing, President Trump denied halting intelligence exchanges with Ukraine, emphasizing the U.S.’s role in assisting Ukraine to achieve a resolution to the conflict. He highlighted efforts to collaborate with both Ukraine and Russia towards ending the war.
Shortly after Trump’s social media post declaring an ‘energy ceasefire’ agreement between Russia and Ukraine, Russian strikes commenced. The Trump administration had previously warned of halting intelligence sharing and weapons purchases through the PURL procurement system if Ukraine continued deep strikes against Russian energy infrastructure.
Ukraine relies heavily on U.S. intelligence for military operations, including satellite and aircraft sensor data for detecting Russian threats. Sources broadly dismissed the idea of a complete intelligence sharing cessation between the U.S. and Ukraine, attributing the lack of warnings to a specific event.
Ukrainian officials also reported issues with Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink technology, crucial for communication and operations amid electronic warfare environments. A nighttime restriction imposed on October 14 complicated military missions involving UAVs, affecting logistics, reconnaissance, and signal relay.
Ukraine’s defense ministry is in talks with the U.S., SpaceX, and NATO partners to address these challenges, testing alternative communication channels. The initial coverage of the Starlink restrictions appeared in the Kyiv Independent and the Financial Times. CBS News sought comments from SpaceX, the White House, and the Pentagon regarding these developments.
During a visit to the United Kingdom, President Zelenskyy urged the United States to respond to recent Russian strikes which conveyed blatant disregard towards the U.S. leadership. Zelenskyy called for an international reaction to Russia’s actions, urging global leaders to respond firmly.
