The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers due to a superficial blood clot in his calf. Hurts has received treatment for this condition for almost a week.
On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen Hurts visited the training room after practice to request treatment for his calf. He reported to medical staff that he had been cleated during the Rams game on October 4th. Despite the injury, Hurts practiced fully on Wednesday and Thursday following the Rams game. On Friday, he continued to receive treatment, practiced in full, and was included in the practice report.
An ultrasound was conducted on Saturday following the team’s flight to London. This ultrasound indicated a superficial blood clot. After reviewing the results, doctors in London concluded that activity and mobility were crucial for Hurts, allowing him to play safely. A follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours post-game and the return flight to Philadelphia was recommended.
Hurts played without limitations during the Sunday game and continued treatment on Monday and Tuesday, practicing in full by Wednesday, as shown in practice reports. Throughout the London trip and the subsequent week, the Eagles maintained communication with the league office regarding Hurts’ condition.
On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound detected movement in the blood clot. As a precautionary measure, Hurts will be sidelined for Sunday’s game against the Panthers while determining the proper treatment course. The Eagles prioritize his health and safety.
Blood clots pose serious risks by potentially blocking blood flow to vital organs, leading to conditions such as pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack. Quick action is necessary to treat clots to prevent damage or fatal outcomes.
The Eagles’ disclosure of Hurts’ medical condition to the league underscores its potential severity. As Week 6 approaches, Hurts’ availability for subsequent games remains uncertain.
Upcoming, the Eagles face division rivals: the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders, and New York Giants in succession after Sunday’s Panthers matchup. Tanner McKee, a third-year veteran, is ready to start against the Panthers. McKee’s career includes two starts, resulting in one win and one loss for the team.
