On Thursday, President Donald Trump made comments about Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, linking him to the Muslim Brotherhood. During a lunch at the White House Rose Garden, Trump described El-Sayed as “100%” connected to the organization. Trump expressed concern about El-Sayed potentially serving on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
The scrutiny of El-Sayed arises from allegations regarding social media posts by his half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi. She claimed their mother was involved with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt during the 1970s. Despite these claims, El-Sayed has consistently denied any ties to the group. He recently addressed the issue on NBC’s Meet the Press, stating, “I have no ties; we have no ties.”
El-Sayed accused his political rivals of using these allegations to promote anti-Muslim sentiments instead of focusing on his policy proposals. “[Opponent Mike Rogers’] only strategy is to point to me and my name and my faith and to say that we’re different,” El-Sayed said. He added that such tactics encourage suspicion based on religious differences.
The subject gained attention due to Abdelhadi’s 2012 social media posts. In one, she expressed admiration for their mother’s involvement in the Muslim Brotherhood during her college years. Another post hinted at familial connections to the group while criticizing its political engagements.
Trump announced his intention to expose El-Sayed, calling him a fraud and a con man. “He’s a fraud. He’s a con man,” Trump stated.
Fox News Digital contacted El-Sayed’s campaign for comments regarding the assertions.
