President Donald Trump has initiated a pivotal move in women’s health by signing an executive order to establish new executive offices aimed at enhancing research in this field. The effort largely credits First Lady Melania Trump for advocating the issue.
During the announcement, President Trump stated, “Today we’re taking historic action to promote women’s health through all phases of life.” He emphasized that despite significant medical advances, numerous diseases affecting women continue to be under-researched.
This order introduces the Women’s Health Division at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) alongside a White House Women’s Health Task Force. The task force will be steered by White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Melania Trump, speaking in the White House’s Rose Garden, remarked that the order “establishes a new standard for women’s health in America.” She outlined a mission to serve women at all stages, from young girls and mothers navigating responsibilities to mature women seeking vitality, dignity, and independence.
The White House fact sheet calls for more research on diseases affecting women, including Alzheimer’s, endometriosis, polyendocrine metabolic ovary syndrome, infertility, maternal health, and menopause.
Some women’s health programs faced potential funding cuts early in Trump’s administration, including the Women’s Health Initiative program, which has been a long-standing national study. However, a decision to cut funds aligning with a mandate to reduce $2.6 billion in NIH contracts was later reversed.
