Recent reports from Australian media have identified the individual arrested in connection with the attack on MP Helen Haines. An image showed the suspect, Brendan Nugent, in a police vehicle surrounded by officers.
According to ABC News, Nugent was detained following an incident on Monday. A Toyota Land Cruiser allegedly hit Haines outside her office in Wangaratta, located in northeast Victoria. Victoria Police have not confirmed his identity but stated that a 43-year-old male is in custody. ABC News reports that Nugent’s family has been acquainted with Haines for over two decades.
Haines, an independent member of Parliament, remains in critical condition at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Due to her injuries, she has lost one leg, while efforts to save the other continue.
Nugent is scheduled to appear at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. In the meantime, Newsweek is seeking further comments from Victoria Police.
Background on the Suspect
ABC News and other media outlets have identified Nugent as the suspect linked to the assault on Haines, who has represented Indi since 2019. A police operation is currently ongoing at a property in Tarrawingee, approximately eight miles from Wangaratta, where Nugent is believed to reside. Wangaratta is a rural town about three hours northeast of Melbourne, with a population of around 30,000.
Reports indicate Nugent was a forestry campaigner in northeast Victoria, collaborating with environmental activists. He earned a master’s degree in forest ecosystems science from the University of Melbourne and dedicated years to researching the forestry sector in Victoria. Nugent also served on the committee for the anti-logging group Save Our Strathbogie Forest until around six years ago. Bertram Lobert, the group’s chair, described Nugent as “a reasonable and thoughtful person before he drifted away.” Nugent lost touch with the forestry activists around 2020.
In the past, Nugent engaged regularly on social media about environmental and political issues. A 2018 post on his X account showcased the same vehicle reportedly involved in the attack on Haines. Nugent and Haines followed each other on social media platforms. In an October 2019 post, Nugent directly engaged with Haines, describing her as “a politician who takes climate change seriously.” He mentioned her four more times by 2021 without any criticism. He also made comments to state and federal politicians concerning environmental matters.
Counterterrorism expert Joshua Roose told ABC News that Nugent had moved from mainstream environmental interests toward more conspiratorial thinking.
Community Ties and Reactions
Nugent attended Wangaratta High School and was part of the intermediate boys Australian rules football team that won the state championship in 1998. His father, Rod Nugent, and his father’s partner, Christine Cunningham, expressed their long-standing friendship with Haines, spanning more than 20 years. They characterized the incident as “unfathomable.”
“We would like to sincerely thank members of the local community and police who came to Helen’s aid yesterday after the shocking and horrific crime,” they stated, adding, “All of our love and all of our thoughts are with Helen and her family and friends.”
