North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has appeared in photographs released by state media, countering rampant speculation about his health. The images were published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and the Workers’ Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun. They depict Kim at a clothing and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang on October 19. Present with him were his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, 13, and other officials.
These images surfaced after a U.S.-based Chinese dissident claimed on social media that Kim had suffered a severe brain hemorrhage and died after treatment in Beijing. Despite circulating on social media and being reported by tabloids, these claims lack independent verification.
Origin of the Rumors
The allegations came from Wanjun Xie, identifying himself as chairman of the banned Chinese Democratic Party. Xie suggested Kim received emergency treatment in Beijing due to limited North Korean medical facilities and then died. However, no evidence was provided. Xie has a history of unverified claims, including about Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The rumors incited further speculation about North Korea’s leadership. Claims suggested Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, may have seized power, though South Korean officials reported no evidence supporting Kim’s alleged death.
Kim Jong Un’s Public Appearances
Kim’s appearance at the exhibition followed several public activities reported by North Korean state media. South Korea’s Ministry of Unification’s records list multiple engagements in August and September, including various public ceremonies, political meetings, and military events.
On September 22, Kim reportedly attended a football match involving personnel from North Korea’s Missile Administration and Second Economic Commission. The state media reported this shortly after. Kim’s latest public presence is part of an ongoing series of appearances, though not yet confirmed by South Korean databases.
History of Health Rumors
The current speculation mirrors past incidents where Kim’s health raised concerns. In 2020, his absence fueled rumors of severe illness post-surgery, but he eventually appeared publicly. Reports about his health persist due to scant reliable information about his medical condition. Kim, considered overweight and a heavy smoker, faces heightened scrutiny, alongside historical health issues within his family.
Kim’s health holds significant importance due to potential regional security implications. He has led North Korea since his father Kim Jong Il’s death in 2011, continuing a family leadership tradition. However, succession plans remain unclear.
Why Kim’s Health Matters
Recent focus has shifted to Kim Ju Ae, appearing with her father at noteworthy events since late 2022. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service suggests Kim may groom her for leadership, yet uncertainty persists due to her age and North Korea’s male-dominated political climate.
A leadership crisis may destabilize the political system and raise questions about nuclear weapons control and potential internal conflicts. Such instability may affect neighboring China or provoke refugee movements, with the U.S. having troops stationed in South Korea.
Kim’s Sister Warns of Rising Tensions
Amid recent tensions between North and South Korea, Kim Yo Jong expressed concerns about instability along the border. KCNA reported her accusations against South Korean forces after a land mine incident injured two soldiers. Pyongyang denies involvement, while Seoul attributes the mines to North Korea. Kim Yo Jong mentioned reevaluating loudspeaker broadcasts along the border, signaling possible escalation.
