Jay-Z will perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show. The 25-time Grammy Award winner chose himself to take the stage at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
Puck News reported that Jay-Z selected himself over other finalists like Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. Harry Styles was also considered for the performance, according to TMZ.
Since 2019, Jay-Z and his company, Roc Nation, have produced and decided the Super Bowl halftime show lineup.
The rapper’s four-city tour will conclude with shows at SoFi Stadium on October 23 and 24. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut album ‘Reasonable Doubt,’ the tour has been lucrative, grossing over $42 million with three consecutive nights at Yankee Stadium in July.
Though Jay-Z has not performed at the Super Bowl before, his wife, Beyoncé, headlined the halftime show in 2013 in New Orleans. She also joined Bruno Mars and Coldplay on stage in 2016 in Santa Clara.
Jay-Z last released an album in June 2017, titled ‘4:44.’ He also re-released his 2000 single ‘I Just Wanna Love U’ recently.
As the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Jay-Z has 50.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify. He ranks 71st among the platform’s most-listened-to artists.
Super Bowl LXI will take place on February 14.
