The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation and the Daniels Fund honor the legacies of their founders, captains of industry who began with humble origins. Lynde and Harry Bradley grew up in Milwaukee with few privileges. Leaving high school to support their family, they juggled odd jobs and helped their mother take in boarders. Their persistence paid off as they founded The Allen-Bradley Company, becoming pioneers in modern manufacturing.
Bill Daniels shared a similar journey, starting in Greeley, Colorado in 1920. His family moved to Iowa during the Great Depression when his father lost his job. At just 12, Daniels sold ice cream to support his family, a stepping stone to his influential role in the cable television industry, earning the title as a “father of cable TV.”
These founders understood the value of their opportunities. Despite their material struggles, they cherished the freedom America offered: the chance to try, fail, and eventually succeed through their own efforts. Their gratitude became central to their legacy.
Daniels gave generously to Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming, focusing on education and community empowerment. The Bradleys invested back into Milwaukee, enhancing civic life and culture. These contributions highlight the possibilities within the American spirit.
America strives to offer equal treatment and opportunities for all. Nearly half of global startup activity happens in the U.S., showcasing it as a prime place to build businesses. As the 250th anniversary of America approaches, examining the factors behind such achievements is essential.
Core Principles of Success
The success of these founders does not derive from a single sector or invention but from enduring principles:
- Rule of Law: Our legal framework provides stability, encouraging investment and innovation with a defense of rights.
- Strong Civil Society: Americans depend on community groups and associations to tackle challenges.
- Informed Citizenry: A society thrives on citizens who think critically and engage in honest debate.
These principles enabled the Bradleys and Daniels to build transformative companies and guide the missions of their foundations today. The Daniels Fund and The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation have granted over $3 billion to bolster civil society and support an informed public.
The American dream endures not because success is assured, but because freedom to strive remains intact. As caretakers of this freedom, our challenge at 250 years is to preserve it for future generations. If we succeed, Americans will continue building and dreaming, much like the Bradleys and Daniels.
Richard Graber serves as president and CEO of The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation. Hanna Skandera is president and CEO of the Daniels Fund.
