Rising bond yields in the U.S. have contributed to a slowdown in the stock market rise fueled by artificial intelligence (AI) investments. The S&P 500, known for climbing consistently from late March to mid-August, saw a decline of nearly 90 points by October 7. The Nasdaq composite also dropped over 1,100 points in two weeks, reaching its lowest in more than a month.
The S&P 500’s information technology sector, including companies like Microsoft and Nvidia, fell by over 500 points in the same timeframe. According to Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, the performance of tech stocks heavily influences overall market activity.
Global bond yields, driven by high oil prices and increasing government deficits related to the Iran conflict, have risen over the past seven months. On October 7, the 10-year U.S. Treasury bond yield peaked at a 24-year high of 5.365% during intraday trading, but it remains above the level from February 27, before the U.S. and Israel commenced strikes on Iran. Similarly, the 30-year Treasury bond yield has decreased from 5.733% on October 8 to below 5.45% currently.
