Vice President JD Vance recently addressed the uncertainty surrounding a potential endorsement from President Donald Trump should he decide to run for president in 2028. During an interview with journalist Mark Halperin on his platform 2Way, Vance conveyed his focus on the upcoming midterm elections, emphasizing that securing control of Congress is his priority.
Vance expressed doubts about his presidential aspirations, stating, “I’m not certain that a 2028 presidential run is in my future.” Nonetheless, he mentioned he believes Trump would endorse him if he does decide to run. This conversation aired shortly before the midterms, as both Republicans and the White House work to maintain political dominance. The interaction shed light on the dynamics between Vance and Trump, particularly when it comes to endorsements.
During the discussion, Halperin questioned whether Vance would receive Trump’s endorsement “right away” if he announced his candidacy. Vance responded, “I would think so, but I don’t know, man. I haven’t talked to him about it.” Halperin proposed that disclosing Vance’s ambitions may put Trump in a peculiar position regarding endorsement, to which Vance disagreed. He clarified, “No, I don’t think it’d be weird. I think I would get his endorsement, but I also value candidates running their own race.” Vance emphasized that a scenario could arise where Trump opts to let the race unfold naturally to avoid influencing the outcome prematurely.
“Whoever the president endorses for the Republican nomination will ultimately win the Republican primary,” Vance remarked during the conversation.
Vance noted the significance of Trump’s endorsement, particularly due to his grassroots appeal among voters while being initially shunned by Republican Party elites. He highlighted the trust Trump has cultivated among everyday voters, affirming the impact of his endorsement in political contests.
“If Trump endorses someone, it’s seen as the elites opposing that candidate,” Vance stated. “Trump’s endorsement holds unparalleled weight because of this perception.” Despite this, Vance acknowledged the importance of voters’ decisions, deeming Trump’s endorsement as influential yet part of a broader democratic process.
Addressing recent interactions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump previously hinted at putting Vance and Rubio against each other for his endorsement in the 2028 race. Referring to them as the “dream team” at a May event, Trump has remained coy about who would lead the ticket.
Vance voiced admiration for Rubio, stating, “I love Marco. I think he’s a great secretary of state and a dear friend. But our focus is currently on serving the American people.” Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for additional comments.
