On Monday, Alberta voters participated in a non-binding referendum to determine the province’s future within Canada. Early projections reveal that 76 percent of voters preferred staying part of Canada, with 23 percent supporting a legal process for a binding referendum on separation. The decision is praised by political leaders as a triumph for national unity.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney remarked on Tuesday that the results indicated a choice for Canada among Albertans. This referendum takes place amidst a trade conflict with the United States, where President Donald Trump has made threats to absorb Canada as a 51st state. Carney responded with defiance, bolstering Canadian nationalism, which enjoys significant public support. He previously warned of external forces aiming to fracture the country for control.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed approval of the decision and plans to brief voters on further steps. Keith Wilson, co-chair of the Let Alberta Decide group advocating for separation, mentioned to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that discussions about Alberta’s future within Canada will persist.
The referendum included nine additional questions, including one addressing immigration issues. Official results will be published on October 29.
