Senator Amy Klobuchar and Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth debated for the first time in their contest to succeed Governor Tim Walz, amid a scandal involving welfare assistance fraud in Minnesota. This fraud, which has misappropriated vast amounts of taxpayer funds from federal and state programs during the pandemic, has been nationally scrutinized for nearly a year, and has led Governor Walz to step down from seeking re-election in 2026.
Demuth, aiming to end a two-decade Republican drought in Minnesota’s gubernatorial elections, continually brought up the fraud case during the debate. Polls suggest Klobuchar holds a slight lead, with Fox News ratings marking the race as likely Democrat.
“We have allowed a culture of waste and fraud to go on far too long,” Demuth stated, as she attempted to connect Klobuchar with the scandal-plagued Walz.
Klobuchar responded by emphasizing her distinct approach. “I have been very clear. I would have caught that fraud,” she declared. Demuth challenged Klobuchar on her role, asking why she had not taken actions or attended hearings about the fraud within her Senate Judicial Committee.
Klobuchar countered, explaining her decisive actions once the fraud surfaced. She contacted the justice department, resulting in more federal prosecutors looking into the issue, highlighting her dedication to handling the problem seriously. Regarding the unaddressed hearings, Klobuchar asserted she was not part of the mentioned subcommittee but participated in multiple others addressing fraud.
Healthcare was another contentious topic, with Demuth associating Klobuchar’s support of ObamaCare with escalating healthcare costs in Minnesota and nationally. Demuth argued that the Affordable Care Act, contrary to promises, failed to control costs or improve accessibility.
During a business forum organized by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, both candidates addressed topics of gas prices, healthcare, paid leave, and insulin costs. They reached consensus on taxes, with both opposing any tax increases.
Klobuchar, starting her gubernatorial campaign after Walz relinquished his re-election bid, has a strong electoral history in Minnesota. She has won her Senate races by wide margins, the last being a near 16-point victory in 2024. Before the Senate, Klobuchar served as Hennepin County Attorney and sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.
On the Republican side, Demuth first entered the Minnesota House in 2018, ascending to GOP leader and later Speaker in 2023. She triumphed in the GOP primary, besting notable candidates, including Mike Lindell, a Trump ally, who received an endorsement from the former president prior to the primary.
