Police and federal agencies are investigating a fatal shooting near a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, on Monday. The incident left one person dead. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Columbus responded to reports of the shooting on the 2200 block of Albert Avenue. Initial reports suggested it occurred at the Alrahma Mosque, located on the same street, but police later clarified it happened at a nearby apartment complex around 2:10 p.m. local time.
An ATF spokesperson stated that the investigation is in its early stages. Preliminary information indicated that shots were fired after funeral attendees exited the Alrahma Mosque at 2226 Albert Avenue. The Columbus Dispatch reported that the shooting took place during a funeral at the mosque, with a photographer on site. Local TV showed police controlling a crowd that gathered on the street, where community members reported arguments and shoving.
The ATF spokesperson confirmed one death but stated that earlier reports of a second potential victim have not been verified. ATF Special Agents are cooperating with the Columbus Division of Police in the ongoing investigation. More information will be released as the investigation progresses.
Columbus Division of Police confirmed the shooting occurred in a parking lot of an apartment complex near the mosque. A spokesperson remarked, “We understand information was provided that this may have occurred at a mosque. While we are still in the preliminary stages of the investigation as to the details regarding this shooting, this was not a targeted attack on the mosque, nor did this incident occur at the mosque.”
The FBI has offered resources to support the investigation and is deferring to the police department for further details. Newsweek reached out to the Alrahma Mosque and the Ohio Department of Public Safety for comments on Monday afternoon.
This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as they are available.
