A remarkable change unfolded for a young boy named Titan. Born in 2021, Titan faced significant hearing challenges due to bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. This condition meant he could only detect around 30 percent of normal hearing capacity.
His mother, Kaitlynn Johnson, from Florida, shared the journey with Newsweek. The diagnosis brought uncertainty about his future. However, Johnson and her husband committed to ensuring their son led the ‘best life possible.’
Titan’s early years were tough. Hearing loss affected his speech and development. Despite wanting to enroll him in kindergarten, educators advised waiting because Titan was behind.
“Since he couldn’t hear well, he struggled with nursery rhymes and ABCs,” Johnson explained.
A New Beginning
In October 2025, Titan received hearing aids. They marked a turning point. Their activation was captured on video by Johnson. Initially, the audiologist set them at a low volume to prevent overwhelming Titan with sound.
The hearing aids enabled Titan to hear his parents’ voices and his own laughter clearly, sparking giggles of joy. Johnson and her husband were overjoyed, understanding the profound impact hearing aids would have on his life.
“His laughter said it all. We were in tears with joy,” said Johnson.
Understanding Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss affects both ears due to inner ear or nerve damage. It is a prevalent permanent type in children, ranging from mild to severe.
The CDC records show over 6,000 infants in 2022 were diagnosed with permanent hearing loss. Hearing is crucial for speech and language development, making early hearing intervention vital.
Audiologist Kira Savin highlighted how hearing loss challenges speech clarity, vocabulary development, language acquisition, and social interactions.
“Consistent hearing aid use and support can enable children to reach their potential,” Savin noted.
Life with Hearing Aids
A year on, Titan regularly wears his hearing aids except during sleep, bathing, water events, or when taking breaks. Kaitlynn Johnson reported ‘tremendous progress’ in Titan’s development with twice-weekly speech therapy.
A TikTok video of Titan’s first hearing aid experience has touched many hearts, with over 1.4 million views. This video encapsulates a life-changing moment, and Johnson hopes it inspires others.
Johnson’s message focuses on love, capability, and faith in overcoming adversity.
“Titan’s story shows resilience, love, and hope,” Johnson expressed.
