Three Democrats from different regions in Virginia held a joint campaign on Monday. They emphasized the war in Iran as a critical election topic beyond its impact on gas prices. The conflict has caused turmoil in oil markets, negatively affecting Republicans in the midterms. In Virginia, a state with significant military presence, the implications are broader.
During an event in eastern Henrico County near Richmond, former representative Elaine Luria, a Navy veteran, criticized the administration’s transparency. She highlighted the deployment of sailors and questioned the reported casualty figures. Luria is running against Rep. Jen Kiggans in Virginia’s 2nd District, an area central to Navy operations.
Henrico prosecutor Shannon Taylor, aiming to unseat Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District, also referenced the war. Meanwhile, former representative Tom Perriello, contesting Rep. John McGuire in the 5th District, cited his previous loss in 2010 as a motivator to end the conflict.
Former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg supported the candidates at the rally. A military veteran himself, Buttigieg, viewed as a potential Democratic figure in the 2028 presidential race, urged Democrats to strive for control of the House. The party requires a net gain of four seats for a majority. He addressed over 200 attendees, emphasizing Virginia’s role in achieving this goal.
“The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you,” he said as the crowd waved signs for all three candidates.
