Federal prosecutors have accused a former OpenAI engineer, Abdulrahman Alfozan, of installing listening devices inside the company’s facilities and possibly aiding a foreign government. They are investigating whether Alfozan’s actions were intended to benefit Saudi Arabia. International travel arrangements for his family were reportedly facilitated by Saudi officials after his arrest, raising concerns about potential foreign government assistance.
Alleged Activities and Saudi Connections
According to prosecutors, Alfozan was in communication with a member of the Saudi royal family and was being recruited for a Saudi artificial intelligence initiative. Though the filing does not claim that Saudi Arabia directly directed the surveillance, Alfozan is alleged to have researched how to build an encrypted recording device. The device was then used to capture sensitive OpenAI conversations regarding research, strategic decisions, and partnerships.
Investigation in Alfozan’s involvement has revealed a second recording device found inside a bag left in a printer room. Searches of Alfozan’s property uncovered evidence suggesting reconnaissance activities within OpenAI facilities.
Risk Factors and Legal Actions
Prosecutors have pointed to Alfozan’s interest in OpenAI’s connections with Saudi Arabia, his communication with the Saudi royal family, and his plans for relocating to Saudi Arabia as factors contributing to the flight risk assessment. The investigation uncovered browsing history indicating Alfozan was searching for engagements between OpenAI and Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
Alfozan also had plans to engage with Saudi organizations, including applying to the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation’s “2030 Leaders” program. He had purchased a one-way ticket to Riyadh and was scheduled for parental leave from OpenAI around the time of his arrest.
Concerns and Comparisons
Prosecutors cite past cases where individuals received assistance from Saudi officials to exit the United States when facing similar accusations. Abdulrahman Alfozan allegedly is financially supported with significant earnings and equity grants from OpenAI before his termination post-arrest. Per ongoing investigation, the government asserts that Alfozan poses a flight risk and potential danger to national security.
