Three Democratic political figures from Virginia united on Monday to campaign against the ongoing conflict in Iran, highlighting its effects beyond fuel prices as a central election concern. This contentious war has disrupted oil markets and is posing challenges for Republicans in the upcoming midterms. Virginia, heavily reliant on the military, feels the impact acutely.
This war … is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s lying about the number of casualties, stated former Representative Elaine Luria, addressing a rally in eastern Henrico County, near Richmond.
Luria faces Rep. Jen Kiggans, also a Navy veteran, in Virginia’s 2nd District, which includes key Navy hubs like Virginia Beach. Henrico County prosecutor Shannon Taylor, contesting Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District, also critiqued her opponent’s support for the war. Meanwhile, former Representative Tom Perriello is challenging Rep. John McGuire in the 5th District, aiming to recover the seat he lost in 2010, partly due to opposition to the war.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, himself a military veteran and a potential Democratic candidate for the presidency in 2028, joined the event to bolster the message. He encouraged Democrats across Virginia to aim high in taking control of the House of Representatives. The party requires a gain of four seats to achieve a majority.
The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you,Buttigieg told an audience of over 200 supporters, who rallied behind the candidates enthusiastically.
