Iran has significantly escalated its efforts to target U.S. personnel abroad. Numerous plots to harm Americans have advanced in the Middle East and other regions, as detailed in an intelligence memo acquired by Fox News.
The memo, sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton on Friday, follows the State Department’s directive for non-emergency U.S. government employees and their families to vacate Saudi Arabia due to intensified attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
“Through various channels, we have received intelligence that Iran has substantially increased efforts to target U.S. personnel,” the memo states.
U.S. officials have authenticated the unclassified intelligence memo, initially reported by Axios. The document highlights Iran’s lethal plotting against U.S. citizens in the Middle East and other areas reaching advanced stages.
Intelligence officials plan to lower the classification level of certain information to facilitate its distribution among State Department personnel.
A U.S. official informed Fox News Digital of the continuous monitoring and evaluation of evolving security threats.
“When it comes to our staffing at embassies, we constantly evaluate new information about the security environment,” the official mentioned. “The threat of Houthi attacks and Iranian terror plots targeting U.S. officials influence our embassy staffing decisions in the region.”
The intelligence report on Iran’s efforts to target U.S. diplomats and officials in the Middle East coincides with President Donald Trump’s consideration of another military strike against Iran if Tehran fails to reach an agreement with Washington.
Earlier this week, the State Department clarified reports of directing nonessential government personnel and their dependents to leave the entire Gulf region. The mandate applies solely to Saudi Arabia, according to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, who refuted claims of a broader regional shutdown.
“The U.S. Department of State issued an ordered departure for non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members in Saudi Arabia,” the department stated.
The State Department has previously renewed warnings for Americans traveling in and through the Middle East, with the latest advisories issued amid several missile attacks launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels toward Saudi Arabia.
