A fire has devastated Adolf Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest” mountain retreat, known as Kehlsteinhaus, leaving the main building “unlikely to be salvageable.” Authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection to the incident.
On Friday evening, around 9:15 p.m. local time (3:15 p.m. ET), approximately 200 emergency responders were dispatched to the site in southern Bavaria. Flames were visible from the remote Alpine location as fire crews approached. Emergency services needed breathing equipment to access the retreat. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
The fire remained active into the early hours of Saturday. The challenging position of the retreat above Berchtesgaden made it difficult to completely extinguish the blaze.
A police spokesperson informed Germany’s Bild newspaper that the property suffered extensive damage and was “unlikely to be salvageable.” The investigation into whether arson was involved in starting the fire is ongoing. A motorcyclist was stopped nearby, and police also detained a “suspicious person,” with prosecutors in Traunstein now leading the criminal investigation.
No details regarding the suspect’s identity or motive have been revealed. Updates will follow as the story develops.
