Policy Failures in Chaofeng Ge’s Detention Center Death
The death of Chaofeng Ge at an immigration detention center has brought forward internal reviews highlighting numerous policy violations and errors by staff. The facility, managed by the Geo Group in Pennsylvania, was scrutinized following the incident.
Chaofeng Ge, a 32-year-old Chinese immigrant from Queens, faced tragic circumstances leading to his death. Before his arrival at the center on July 31, 2025, Ge had a history of attempting suicide. Unfortunately, crucial medical paperwork detailing his past suicide attempt and prescription for antidepressant medication was misplaced during his intake process. This significant oversight was identified in an internal review conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Due to this misplacement of essential documents, the screening nurse was unaware of Ge’s mental health history and his prior need for antidepressant treatment. Such errors have highlighted serious issues within the detention facility’s procedures and oversight.
