Understanding Prostate Exams and Transgender Health

At a recent dinner, my friend Cristina mentioned she was scheduled for a prostate exam. Years ago, such a statement might have been puzzling, but today, it highlights progress in transgender health awareness.

Reflecting on our first meeting, I recalled that Cristina’s transition was her story to share. As she revealed her appointment plans, the men in our group empathized, understanding the discomfort involved in such procedures. We knew the experience firsthand.

A few months ago, a public radio broadcast discussed ‘people with prostate cancer.’ My boyfriend, Hugh, questioned the terminology, assuming prostate cancer only affected men. I explained that trans women, retaining their prostates, also face these health issues.

Consider the implications if transitioning removed the prostate: many might choose it as an option against prostate health concerns. This thought experiment underscores the complexities and health decisions faced by transgender individuals as they live authentically.

Cristina, hailing from the Philippines, exemplifies courage in embracing her identity. Her willingness to share personal health experiences enriches conversations about transgender health.

Amusingly, Cristina later clarified her appointment was for a colonoscopy, not a prostate exam. This slight mix-up doesn’t lessen the importance of discussing transgender individuals navigating similar health challenges.
