The Federal Reserve decided to maintain current interest rates despite ongoing inflation concerns. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted 10-2 in favor of keeping the benchmark federal funds rate between 3.75% and 4%. Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that more data is needed to determine the best policy for returning inflation to the 2% target.
Two members, Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack, disagreed, advocating for a quarter-point rate hike. Six weeks prior, the committee had increased rates by a quarter point, marking the first rise in over three years. Inflation, exacerbated by the Iran conflict, poses challenges for President Trump and the GOP during this election season.
Warsh noted some shifts in financial and credit conditions since the rate increase in September. He observed businesses and households facing tighter conditions, reflecting expectations. Warsh expressed caution, stating he cannot yet declare conditions tight, but sees movement towards economic growth and stability.
“Market participants are becoming somewhat more discerning in their capital allocations,” Warsh observed.
Traders largely expected rates to remain unchanged, with a 92.8% chance of steadiness, as per CME FedWatch tool data.
