11-year-old Magician Amazes Audience
Lubelo Mthenjana, an 11-year-old magician, captured the attention of the audience during a junior magic contest at the College of Magic in Cape Town, South Africa. Dressed in a sharp suit with a yellow bow tie, he confidently introduced himself and performed impressive tricks, like making paper clips vanish and reappear. The highlight was when he conjured sweets out of thin air, delighting the crowd.
A Vibrant Atmosphere at the College
The College of Magic was bustling with excitement on a cloudy September morning as students of various ages prepared for the contest. The classrooms were alive with aspiring magicians, dressed in top hats and ties, dashing around the colorful, poster-decorated halls. The building housed cabinets filled with magic essentials like wands and trophies from global competitions.
Unique Magic School in a Diverse Setting
Located in a suburb of Cape Town, the College of Magic resembles a real-world Hogwarts with classes for students aged 10 to 18. They learn skills ranging from puppetry and illusions to stage magic, fostering diverse talents. Founded in 1980 by David Gore, the school stood out with its multiracial policy during apartheid. It offered young people a place to unite over a common magical interest, remaining diverse even today.
A Journey Beyond Magic
Despite the modest fees for the six-year course, 80% of students receive financial support. Gore believes magic is a powerful companion for the youth in South Africa, as it doesn’t require expensive resources. The art form encourages creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving. A 2021 study found learning magic enhances creative fluency and originality.
Lubelo’s Magical Path
For Lubelo, joining the College of Magic opened doors to a new world. After seeing a trick by a family friend, he eagerly awaited his chance to enroll. Now, as ‘Spade Boy,’ he practices magic at home and shares his passion with friends. Despite local skepticism linking magic to witchcraft, he proudly spreads the joy of non-dark magic.
Magic Amidst Challenges
Lubelo’s mother appreciates how magic keeps him engaged and away from neighborhood dangers. With high crime rates in South Africa, including areas around Cape Town, magic offers a positive escape. Unfortunately, even their community faces violence, as seen in the tragic loss of a young magician, Duma Mgqoki, earlier in the year.
The College’s Impact
At the College of Magic, students from diverse backgrounds gather, sharing equipment, classes, and experiences. Despite different socioeconomic statuses, they unite. Founder David Gore remains hopeful that these young magicians will contribute to societal change in the future.
Excitement and Triumph
After his performance, Lubelo was celebrated with fist bumps from peers. As the judges deliberated, nervous energy filled the room. Awaiting results, Lubelo emerged as the winner of his age group, bringing joy to his mother and confidence for future performances. It’s a testament to the power of magic and its lasting impact on young lives.
