Ghanaian Mother and Son Ordered to Leave U.S. After Detention

A pregnant woman from Ghana and her young son, who spent over a week in a windowless detention room at a Washington airport, are returning to Africa after being ordered deported. Her lawyers confirmed this decision on Friday.

Annabella Gyasi, 38, arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport on May 19 for a medical appointment for her son. He was born with severely deformed hands, as noted in a petition by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Virginia. Despite having valid visas, immigration officers detained them. Gyasi expressed fear of persecution in Ghana and reluctance to return, according to her lawyers.

Detained for several days led to two hospitalizations due to pregnancy complications, including vaginal bleeding and high blood pressure. Her lawyers stated she felt compelled to agree to leave the U.S. under these conditions. Mary Bauer, Executive Director of ACLU Virginia, remarked, “While we’re relieved that Ms. Gyasi and her son will soon be free from this nightmare, no one should be subjected to the inhumane conditions they endured.”

Gyasi reported insufficient food during detention, although the Department of Homeland Security denied these claims, asserting detainees receive adequate care, including medical evaluation, medication, and food.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema issued an order emphasizing that the welfare of the petitioners and interests of justice are best served by their immediate return to Ghana. A previous order mentioned that immigration officials deemed Gyasi’s tourist visas invalid since she stated intention to seek asylum in the U.S. rather than return home.

Gyasi and her son were scheduled to depart for Ghana on Friday evening.
