Cam Skattebo made a strong comeback for the New York Giants, powering their ground game after facing limited playtime in earlier games. On October 25, Skattebo rushed 17 times for 124 yards and scored a touchdown, playing a crucial role in the Giants’ 27-21 overtime victory against the Houston Texans.
According to ESPN, this marked Skattebo’s first professional game crossing the 100-yard rushing milestone. His impressive performance, however, was marred by a penalty. During a significant run, Skattebo collided with Texans safety M.J. Stewart, leading to an unnecessary roughness call for helmet contact.
Giants coach John Harbaugh had to physically restrain a visibly upset Skattebo on the sideline and later contested the penalty decision. Skattebo expressed his frustration with the NFL, criticizing the organization for both spotlighting and penalizing his aggressive playstyle. He stated, “The NFL loves to post me when I do stuff like that, but then also wants to take stuff from me. I’m going to run the ball like I want to run the ball, and if I’m going to continue to get flagged or fined for it, I guess I’m going to play for free.”
OutKick reported that the replay of the penalty resembled Skattebo’s earlier runs, suggesting a fine might be expected. This turnaround came after a challenging spell; Skattebo recently fumbled during overtime against the Washington Commanders, contributing to a tied game. Following that, he didn’t have any carries in the game against the New Orleans Saints.
In the clash with the Texans, Skattebo’s efforts, including a 42-yard run, paved the way for Devin Singletary’s decisive 30-yard touchdown. This performance followed the release of fellow running back Najee Harris from the team.
Skattebo noted the collective message from the Giants’ backfield, emphasizing their capabilities. “It was awesome to be able to show Coach and show the team that we have running backs in the backfield that can do it,” he said.
Despite suffering a hamstring strain on his 42-yard run, which led him to limp off the field, the Giants now stand at 4-2-1. They will have a bye before facing the Philadelphia Eagles, beginning two crucial NFC East games in the span of five days.
