Major League Baseball has honored Francisco Lindor, shortstop for the New York Mets, by naming him the 2026 Roberto Clemente Award winner. This prestigious accolade is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the values of MLB both on and off the field. Lindor becomes the fifth player born in Puerto Rico to receive this honor, echoing the legacy of the late Clemente.
The New York Mets celebrated Lindor’s achievement on social media, highlighting his contributions. They described him as a representative of baseball through his character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions. In their post, they praised Lindor, stating, “Representing the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field, @Lindor12BC is the 2026 Roberto Clemente Award winner!”
The Mets shared a short video narrated by Lindor, which showcased his philanthropic efforts. Lindor mentioned, “I’m all about bringing people together. I’m all about bringing them to the next step, and learn from them as well.” This video highlighted some of his charitable initiatives, such as his work with the nonprofit organization Seen, which assists families with children facing physical disabilities.
Lindor also founded “Lindor’s Leaders,” a program at Bayside High School focusing on mental health, communication, and teamwork, aimed at cultivating community leaders. His efforts extend to hosting youth baseball clinics, supplying backpacks and school supplies to numerous children annually, supporting environmental initiatives, and restoring athletic facilities in Caguas, his hometown.
This major honor came after Lindor’s 12th MLB season, during which he achieved his 300th career home run. Although this is the first time Lindor has received the Roberto Clemente Award, he had been nominated by the Mets for four consecutive years. Speaking to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, Lindor reflected on the recognition, saying, “It’s a little bit surreal, you know? It’s bigger than baseball, in a way. Like, we are in the entertainment business, and we are there to bring smiles and joy to people, but also to carry it off the field to me is even cooler. So it’s something that I’ll forever continue to do.”
