President Donald Trump visited Mississippi on Monday to support Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith in the final days before the midterm elections. This rally is part of Trump’s campaign trail through several Republican-leaning states.
The Mississippi rally was organized to bolster Hyde-Smith, who is facing a challenge from Democrat Scott Colom in a state traditionally favoring Republican candidates. This election could be pivotal in shaping the balance of power in Congress and state governments.
During the rally, Trump praised Hyde-Smith but emphasized vigilance, saying, “I’m here because Cindy’s doing great, but I just got to make sure. I can’t take a chance,” as he urged attendees to support Hyde-Smith. Trump launched a series of attacks against Colom, labeling him a “Marxist radical” and a “fake,” claiming he pretends to be moderate.
Colom was also present on-site, expressing his intent to listen to Trump’s supporters. “They actually deserve a senator that will listen to them, that actually cares about what they think, actually cares about what they’re going through,” Colom stated.
Prior to Trump’s arrival, Hyde-Smith spoke at the rally, emphasizing the importance of controlling the Senate in the upcoming vote and asking for voter support to return to Washington as “that fighter with the president.” Following Trump’s lengthy speech, Hyde-Smith briefly addressed the crowd again, echoing support for Trump before exiting the stage.
Social media platforms circulated video clips of the exchange, eliciting mixed reactions regarding Hyde-Smith’s short remarks. Some users found the moment awkward, whereas others pointed out the challenge faced by candidates who share the stage with Trump, whose speeches often leave limited time for others.
Mississippi is one of the nation’s strongly Republican states, with Trump winning here three times. Hyde-Smith may be the favorite, but Colom’s campaign has caught attention and funding from the Democratic Party. The Senate Majority PAC introduced a $1.2 million TV ad campaign backing Colom, and former Vice President Kamala Harris joined him in recent campaigning days before Trump’s visit.
This contest is part of broader efforts by both parties leading up to the midterms. Voter dissatisfaction over issues like inflation and foreign policy challenges during Trump’s presidency have prompted Democrats to contest additional House and Senate races. Trump plans to visit other states he has previously won, including Texas, South Carolina, Iowa, and Kansas.
Hyde-Smith secured her Senate seat initially via appointment after Thad Cochran’s resignation in 2018. She later won a special election, becoming the first woman senator from Mississippi.
