Authorities are investigating a shooting involving federal agents that occurred Monday evening on Chicago’s Lower West Side, near the Dan Ryan Expressway. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed late Monday night the incident occurred near West 18th Street and Union Avenue and involved one of their agents. According to the FBI, in adherence to their protocols, the agency’s Inspection Division is reviewing the matter.
Police responded to the shooting, blocking access to the outbound Dan Ryan 18th Street exit as of 8:15 PM, with a significant police presence observed at the location. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) stated that their Investigative Response Team arrived to document the incident. However, details regarding the shooting, including the involvement of federal agents and any injuries, remain undisclosed.
A spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department noted there was one transport from the area early Monday evening but did not provide information on the individual’s condition. Additional details about the incident were not available from the spokesperson.
Local resident Marina Corona shared her observations, stating she did not hear the shooting but noticed the subsequent response. She described seeing numerous emergency vehicles upon looking out her window, and observed heightened activity with police officers running along the street. Corona, who has been a lifelong area resident, noted the presence of sirens as a common experience, yet emphasized the unusual intensity of the police presence on this occasion. As a precaution, she opted to turn off her lights and secure her residence for several hours.
An Illinois State Police spokesperson acknowledged their role in providing traffic control support following the incident involving the FBI at 18th and Union. The FBI reiterated that it treats all shooting incidents involving their agents or task force members with utmost seriousness, yet refrained from further commenting due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
