Two high-speed trains have collided in Spain, resulting in at least ten fatalities, according to reports from Spanish state media. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning in Toledo province, as confirmed by ADIF, Spain’s rail system operator.
Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the government of Castilla-La Mancha, informed state broadcaster TVE of the likelihood that the death toll would rise, marking the collision as a significant and grave occurrence.
Health Minister Mónica García addressed TVE, indicating that a definitive count of casualties is yet to be established. Madrid has offered vital support to Castilla-La Mancha to facilitate the transfer of victims to hospitals in the capital.
“We do not have a figure, but it is going to be a major tragedy,” she emphasized.
An ADIF spokesman disclosed to Newsweek that the collision happened at the 118-kilometer point involving two trains, the Iryo and the AVE, both traveling on the Madrid-Seville route. Rail traffic in the area remains suspended.
A Guardia Civil Toledo representative reported to Newsweek that all Guardia Civil patrols have been deployed to the site. Several carriages derailed, and efforts are underway to gather more information.
This is an evolving story, and updates will follow as new information emerges.
