President Donald Trump and Democrat James Talarico recently held simultaneous rallies in the predominantly Republican area of Lubbock. Both events reportedly attracted thousands.
State Representative Talarico’s social media post on Tuesday night claimed 4,000 people attended his rally at the Fiesta Center. In contrast, Trump was across town supporting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Talarico’s Republican opponent.
Talarico shared an image of a packed venue, stating: “Lubbock County voted for President Trump by 40 points. Tonight 4,000 people showed up at our rally. Texans are ready for change.”
The venue’s ballroom can hold up to 2,600 people. However, KAMC reporter Jen Phillips noted plans to extend capacity to 3,000. The Texas Tribune reported lines stretching several city blocks.
Meanwhile, Trump and Paxton’s rally took place at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. A reporter from The Amarillo Tribune estimated the arena was full, with about 4,000 attendees. The exhibit hall’s max capacity is 4,914.
Newsweek reached out to both Talarico and Paxton campaigns for comments on the turnout. While estimates suggest Trump’s rally could have had a larger crowd, Talarico’s turnout is significant given Lubbock’s Republican tendencies.
Lubbock County favored Trump by 40 points in 2024 and has not supported a Democratic president since 1964.
